The "El Cortez" has been operated since 1963 by Jackie Gaughan who still maintains an apartment on the property and can often be seen on the tables. The "El Cortez" is a block from the Fremont Street Experiance on a block which used to be a bit iffy but in 2007 it was reopened as Fremont East District after some $6 million in renovations and is now home to many trendy bars. The "El Cortez" itself has nice enough casino for downtown and the hotel rooms are basic but functional. In 2009 the "El Cortez" opened the Cabana Suites in the former Ogden Hotel across the street, the trendy suites which include such things as 42" flat screen televisions and ipod docks. The food at the restaurants is okay but the service at there coffee shop the Cafe Cortez can be hit or miss if a local comes in the servers may ignore the customers while they all gather round to chat (this has happened more than once to me). The "El Cortez" is generous with comps and has low table limits and 3 to 2 blackjack which is nice. This property may not be for everyone but if you are looking for a less expensive property this hotel isn't a bad bet.

Food Court:

Basic food court that includes Seattles Best Coffee, Subway and Dryers Ice Cream.

Game Side Dining

Im still torn on this feature the fact you can order food and have it brought to your slot machine or table game why you play seems interesting so you can continue to play while you eat. The idea of a snack while you play doesn't seem like a bad idea but i don't know about playing cards while someone next too you is eating a meal while playing. This service at the "El Cortez" is called the 'Gambling Gourmet' and, i have only seen it a couple of times and both players were playing slots maybe on a future trip i will try it or if you have tried it please leave in comments or email a review and we will post to the site.
