"Western" Cuts Casino Hours

If you are not familar with the "Western" its basically a motel with a small casino in a iffy area of downtown Las Vegas. The property is about a block from the "El Cortez" and I have walked there during the day and never had an issue but I don't know if I would make the same trip at night; Now if you plan to make a late night trip there you may have to head there later as they have announced that they will be closing the casino between the hours of 2am and 10am. This might seem unusual but casinos such as Mermaids on Fremont Street and even the Golden Gate closes at times during the late night early morning hours but most casinos in town are twenty four hours. This is a smart move for the "Western" because it saves them paying for a whole shift of employees at the slowest time of the day and with the current economic climate keeping costs low is the name of the game hopefully things will pick up soon.

Editors Notebook: "El Cortez," Traffic Up & Feedback

As regular readers may have noticed we have been busy updating the website and judging from the traffic numbers where yesterday we had our highest traffic day ever it looks like the additions are doing well. One of the things added recently was the "El Cortez" section so check that out when you get a chance. Over the near future all downtown hotels will be added followed by sections for all the Strip and off Strip properties as well as Stateline. If you want your review or story shared with the Las Vegas Inside Out readers then send it to lasvegasinsideout@gmail.com or leave comments in the stories or new Las Vegas Forum section.

Vegas StrEATS Festival Coming May 14th

Food Truck festivals where a bunch of food trucks with great food gather are becoming more common and on May 14th one of these festivals comes to downtown Las Vegas. The event is near the "El Cortez" and is called the Vegas StrEATS Festival on the Jackie Gaughan Parkway from 6pm to 2am. Each food truck will also include a bbq themed dish exculsively for this event which coincides with Hellorado which runs from May 12-15th. This event will also have a larger area to accomadate the larger crowds and expand on to 6th street. The food trucks scheduled to appear at the event are Slidin’ Thru, Muncheeze, Fukuburger, Sloppi Jo’s, Tasty Bunz, Haulin’ Ballz, Food Slingers, Snow Ono Shave Ice, Island Breeze, Cheesesteak Truck as well as more. The event is being sponsored by the "El Cortez", Slidin' Thru and the new Insert Coin(s) Videolounge Gamebar who will be providing food live art and music to the Fremont Street East Entertainment District. The Fremont Street East Entertainment District is the area from the Fremont Street Experiance to the "El Cortez" and over the last year or so has really took off with cool bars.

Credit/Debit Card Holds

More and more hotels are putting hold amounts on your credit/card for stuff you may charge to your room and at some properties its not an option its required. This hold amount can be released as soon as you check out or take up to two weeks to clear which is annoying to say the least. These hold amounts arn't always disclosed on companies web sites or if are its in tiny print and the desk clerk doesn't always tell you before they run the amount on your card. One interesting point is the amounts and rules can differ from property within the same chain; One such difference is i have not been charged at the "Fremont" downtown but am charged $100 at "The Orleans" both owned by Boyd's. I have my own internet and can watch movies on my laptop and don't use room service unless i have a comp credit so mostly don't want to charge stuff to my room. Here are some recent experiances at some properties.

El Cortez: $50 charged to my account that took two weeks to be credited back

Rio & Flamingo: They run your card but dont charge deposit if you don't want

Fremont: No charge

Orleans: $100 charged to my account released moment you check out

Las Vegas Club: No charge

Golden Nugget: No charge

Rules at different properties change all the time check with your hotel if its an issue for you.

Free Burgers At El Cortez

Okay this is a tasty promotion on Memorial Day at the El Cortez downtown, free White Castle burgers. For Memorial Day May 31st between noon and 6pm they are handing out the free burgers to players playing tables or slots if you are playing and using your slot card. See the El Cortez for more details but any promotion than gives out free foot is good to me.
