"Western" To Close After 41 Years
Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at 5:05AM We recently reported that the "Western" downtown was cutting its casino hours now Vegas Inc is reporting that the property is to close down on January 16th. The property is owned by the Tamares Real Estate Group that also owns the newly remodeled "Plaza" hotel and the sister property "Las Vegas Club" on Fremont Street. The desicion to close this property isn't really a surprise with the economy as it is at the moment plus the "Western" is run down in iffy area too far away from the Fremont Street Experiance. The property in recent years has been known for cheap drinks, food and table games. It will be interesting to see what becomes of the block wide property my guess in the near term nothing and it wil just remain closed; In the long term i wonder if the property will be remodelled or knocked down and replaced with another hotel casino or even used as a non gaming use.

Hotel "Western" Cuts Casino Hours
Saturday, November 12, 2011 at 10:50PM If you are not familar with the "Western" its basically a motel with a small casino in a iffy area of downtown Las Vegas. The property is about a block from the "El Cortez" and I have walked there during the day and never had an issue but I don't know if I would make the same trip at night; Now if you plan to make a late night trip there you may have to head there later as they have announced that they will be closing the casino between the hours of 2am and 10am. This might seem unusual but casinos such as Mermaids on Fremont Street and even the Golden Gate closes at times during the late night early morning hours but most casinos in town are twenty four hours. This is a smart move for the "Western" because it saves them paying for a whole shift of employees at the slowest time of the day and with the current economic climate keeping costs low is the name of the game hopefully things will pick up soon.
