Today i took a visit to Hash House A Go Go’s new location at the off Strip Rio. The new location replaces the former coffee shop which is down a hallway towards the Penn & Teller Theater, Rio Spa and their convention rooms. The hours are from 6am to 3pm daily which is similar to the former coffee shop that it replaced. Hash House A Go Go if you are not familiar with, has become famous for huge portions as you can see from the picture above. The service at this location like the other locations at the Quad on the Strip and the Plaza Downtown is friendly and attentive. The food itself is really good quality i had the corned beef hash which comes in flaky strips instead of the cubed variety many might be familiar with and was really tasty. The breakfast shown was $14 which isn’t bad for the quantity and quality although $4 for coffee seemed high but it is Las Vegas. The chef also must like pine trees because part of a tree was holding my bread together a little strange but okay. If you want to add a cocktail to go with your breakfast most of the specialty cocktails seemed to be in the $14 range each. I like tradional coffee shops but in this case i think replacing it at the Rio with a Hash House A Go Go was an upgrade.

There has been a lot of press recent about the Las Vegas Wranglers the minor league hockey team in town who plays at the Orleans Arena. The team is losing its home at the Orleans Arena after this season and the teams status was up in the air until a deal to build at new stadium on the roof of a parking structure at the Plaza in Downtown Las Vegas was announced for next season. The deal with minor league teams in general is you don’t get the big name talent but you get inexpensive by sports standard tickets and any many would say a more fan friendly event. If you are in town March 22nd against the Colorado Eagles it might be a good time to check out the Las Vegas Wranglers because after the game they have a concert from Great American Taxi. This event and remaining games this season are at the Orleans Arena next to the Orleans so if you want do something a little different then check the out, for more information check with the Orleans or Wrangler website.
The BK Whopper Bar is located upstairs in the shopping area at the Rio near the Chippendales Showroom entrance and is a little fancier than most Burger Kings and also sells beer which you most likely won’t find at your neighborhood Burger King. The restaurant is known for more exotic combinations of toppings than you would usually find at a Burger King which you can mix and match or go with some of their set combinations. The service in this restaurant has been spotty at times i have visited over the last few years sometimes good and sometimes. This time i walked up to the cashier and she was cleaning out her cash register which she continued to do for five minutes not saying anything to me even though she looked at me twice and then walked off with her draw. Another give came up but looked confused because she saw her co worker walk off with the cash drawer. The employee then asked her manager who was inventorying the beer what to do and he blew her off several times before finally helping the frustrated employee by switching the cash draw from the other register. The food came pretty quickly i had ordered a black and blue which was blacken with blue cheese on the top which kind of overpowered the burger but it and the fries were tasty. If you are looking for an inexpensive place for a bite to eat at Rio this is a good bet as well as being open twenty four hours a day. If you can look past the uneven service the food is good value for the price.

If you are looking to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the Strip or Downtown then a visit to the off Strip “Pinball Hall Of Fame” might be the escape you needed. The 450 foot museum is full of classic pinball machines from the 1950’s until the 1990’s, most of which are playable with quarters. The machines in the collection are maintained by a non profit organization all money earned goes towards the upkeep of these machines. The museums website at pinballmuseum.org has a list of current machines available if you want to see if they have a game from your youth. The museum is located at 1610 E Tropicana Avenue and the museum is open from 11am to 11pm every day except Fridays and Saturdays when they are open to midnight. If you cannot make it to the off Strip location, the museum does have a small selection of machines at the Riveria on the Strip located near the food court.
The St Patrick’s Day Block Party was an annual tradition at the old O’ Sheas on the Strip but when the former location closed to make way for the Linq project in 2012 the tradition came to an end. Now with the new O’ Sheas open inside the Linq the tradition has returned with the St Patrick’s Day Block Party running from noon to midnight Monday. The fun will kick off with O’ Sheas very own Lucky leading a parade of shenanigans at noon followed with a commitment ceremony for a couple who’s love story started four years ago at O’ Sheas. After the commitment ceremony the rest of the day will be live music as well as things such as stilt walkers, balloon artists, beer pong giveaways, leprechauns and of course lots of green beer. There will of course be drink specials which include $3 12oz draft beers, $8.50 call drinks and $10 car bombs.
Recently the Silverton an off Strip resort sent a message to its customers that it planned to add a hotel tower to the property. Now more details are coming out and it looks like the Silverton wants to add two towers to the property and make them timeshares. A few years ago when the economy was booming it seemed every new project had at least some kind of timeshare element then the downturn happened and timeshares went unsold across town. The current plan is to add the towers on a parking lot south of the existing parking garage, each of the towers would have 20 rooms per floor for a total of 400 rooms between the two towers. The timeshare element seems a strange choice especially with the 400 rooms being added to an off Strip location but the added rooms will bring more traffic to the rest of the property which does have a cool aquarium for the future timeshare guests to check out.
