Saving Money At Buffets

For many years the buffets in Las Vegas with their seemly endless choice of food were seen by the resorts as loss leaders with their low prices just like the cheap rooms and inexpensive shows to get you to stay at the property and gamble in the casino.

This changed with all the celebrity chef restaurants starting to open in Las Vegas and the resort companies seeing the many things such as buffets as potential profit centers instead of a loss making service way to draw gamblers. The Cosmopolitan when it opened was a real game changer with its Wicked Spoon buffet that offered top quality food in small portions and became very popular so other higher end resorts  decided to up there game too with more expensive items.

If its your first time visiting Las Vegas and your budget allows i would go to one higher end buffets and experience one of the best buffets at resorts such as Cosmopolitan, Caesar’s Palace, Bellagio or Wynn just to name a few. But if you want to save money and not blow your budget at when eating at buffets there is ways to save money.

Meal Time:

One way to save money is to either eat early in the day as usually breakfast is less expensive than lunch and lunch is less expensive than dinner. Some people also like to arrive at the tail end of one sitting so they can get items off the next sitting without paying for it; Many buffets close down usually an hour while they change from breakfast to lunch and the same from lunch to dinner, some items may not be available as they switch but it’s one way to get items off the next meal for no extra charge.

Theme Nights:

Another option is to avoid buffets on dinner theme nights if you are not going to partake in the item that’s part of the theme, examples of are prime rib night, lobster night, seafood feast etc; If you are not going to have prime rib for example on prime rib night you are paying a higher price than normal for dinner for a item you aren’t going to eat anyways.

Less Expensive Hotel:

Most often the nicer the hotel the more expensive the buffet is but it’s also more likely they will have better quality and wider selection of food items available. If you are looking for less expensive options on the Strip then hotels such as the Luxor, Excalibur, Flamingo, Harrahs or even the Stratosphere are good options.

Caesars Buffet Of Buffets:

The Buffet of Buffets deal has been around for many years and i remember when it first started it was $19.99 but things have changed as the price now is considerably higher. The way the deal works is you pay the fee and then can eat as much as you want at five Caesars Entertainment buffets for 24 hours from when you pay.

Pricing is generally $10 higher if you are not a Caesars Reward member but its free to sign up and, you must be 21. The weekday regular price for Caesars Reward members is $59.99 and the weekend price is $69.99. If you want to add on Caesar’s Palace popular and expansive Bacchanal Buffet that is an add on starting at $25.

The question you might be asking does the Buffet of Buffets deal save you money that kind of depends on how you use it but to get your moneys worth you have to get three meals out of it which can be done with a little planing.

Near Strip Properties:

Las Vegas April 2012

Another option is to head off Strip as prices are generally lower although there are several properties not too far off the Strip that can save you money. The Gold Coast, Palms and Rio are in a cluster a block off the Strip although if you walk you do have to navigate a busy freeway entrance and i wouldn’t advise walking when the temperatures are high. A free option to get to them is the Boyds shuttle that runs from the Strip to Gold Coast and another good choice the Orleans which is further off Strip.

The Palace Station which has recently gone through a refurbishment is another great option as thats also a long block from the Strip, i wouldn’t walk to this one its a long walk by a busy street but this buffet is also open at present 24 hours a day i would check current times before you visit.

Downtown Properties:

If you are heading Downtown anyways the three main buffets there are going to be generally less expensive than the strip with generally the Fremont the least expensive and then the Golden Nugget and Main Street Station a little more expensive.

Players Clubs:

Having a players card will often get you a discount on a buffet or you may get a bigger discount depending on your players card level or by trading in points. Off Strip or locals casinos are more likely to give you discounts with your players club but by using it when you often pay you often add to your points to use for comps.

Coupon Books:

Generally as the prices on Las Vegas buffets have gone up you see less and less discounts appear in the free coupon books and magazines; This being said it doesn’t mean you won’t find one as 2 for 1 buffets deals do appear for example so still worth checking out.

Sports Deli Closes

MGM, Las Vegas

Carnegie DeliIt’s been a tough time for delis in recent times first with the closure of Canters Deli at the Linq and now comes news that The Sports Deli at the MGM Grand has closed. The Sports Deli may be know to many as the Stage Deli which it was named for 23 years before they changed the name but either way the location is going to become another Starbucks because of the lack of Starbucks in Las Vegas (yes that was sarcastic).

If you still want your deli fix and are craving a huge pastrami sandwich for example, the Carnegie Deli at the Mirage is still open and a good option and well worth a visit. Deli’s in Las Vegas used to be really popular at one time but maybe the younger generation are less interested in huge sandwiches of meat either way the Carnegie Deli at the Mirage seems to get good traffic and hopefully it remains open.

The Donut Bar

The Donut Bar Outside

The Donut Bar SignYes i do visit the buffets or Dunkin Donuts at the Fremont for breakfast but at least once per trip sometimes more i walk over to the Donut bar for their amazing fresh made donuts. The Donut Bar is a short walk from Fremont Street and has the usual selection of coffees, lattes and mochas but what people are there for is the good donuts with the best ingredients with exotic flavors that you don’t always find at a donut shop such as cake batter, Nutella, Snickers or Bacon; Yes the bacon donut does taste good with its slightly salty taste but sweet at the same time a little strange but really good.

The Donut Bar DonutsThe Donut bar opens at 7 am during the week and 8 am on the weekends but one note once they sell out of the days donuts they close up for the day so if you visit later you might find a note on the door that they have sold all the donuts so closed for the day so get there early. The Las Vegas location is an outpost of a popular San Diego based donut shop and with the big sizes and quality ingredients it reminds me a little of Voodoo Donuts in Portland although the Donut Bar does less of the wacky flavors like Capt Crunch that Voodoo does.

Redneck Riviera Closes

It looks like the rumors are true and the Redneck Riviera at the Grand Bazaar Shops located next to Bally’s has closed it doors after just over a year being open.  The Nashville style honky-tonky-tonk bar was the creation of John Rich one half of the country superstars Big & Rich in what was going to be a chain of bars under the same name with a location in Nashville now under construction. If you are not a country fan its possible you could have seen John Rich on the Apprentice or on the Wahlburgers television show where he discussed having his customers being able to order the Wahlburgers from the restaurant below and brought up to Redneck Riviera which in fact did happen.

Redneck Riviera was a 4,249 square foot space that as you would expect had live music as well as appearances by the owner John Rich and stayed open to 4 am and had such things as an American flag made out of beer cans, a garage door, a horse saddle with small mirrors to make a disco ball and restroom sinks made out of old tires with gas pump faucets. The space also had a Heroes Bar which was said to be staffed by vets and where all vets got their first drink free.

The Redneck Riviera concept seems sound although the location at the top of the stairs on the walkway to enter Bally’s wasn’t the greatest because if you were entering from the Las Vegas Strip you would walk through the whole Grand Bazaar Shops with numerous bars and restaurants before you got to the Redneck Riviera. I would like to see this bar reopen in the future in Las Vegas in a better location although at the present time the company website and Facebook page has barely any mention of its Las Vegas location as its all about the Nashville opening.

White Castle Downtown Now

The new White Castle is now open on Fremont Street at Fremont and Fourth in the former Harley Davidson shop space. For the fans of White Castle so now there is a second Las Vegas location to enjoy their mini burgers. The first location at Casino Royale on the Strip had to be closed down briefly several times at the opening to restock food although as this is the 2nd Las Vegas location I don’t foresee the same issues at this location. If you are not familiar with White Castle they are famous for selling mini burgers where instead of getting one burger you get several mini burgers. I’m not a huge fan of White Castle although in its prime location it should do well and a cheaper fast food option albeit at tourist area pricing should do well.

Monte Carlo Adds Chicago Steakhouse

The space formally occupied by Brand at Monte Carlo is going to become a location of Bavette’s Bar & Bouef a critically acclaimed steakhouse from Chicago. The Chicago location of Bavette’s Bar & Bouef has dark panel walls and leather seats in a darker speak easy look and its possible some of that look could make it to its new Las Vegas location. The Chicago restaurant is known for of course amazing steaks but also food with a French flair but less formal than most French restaurants. The Las Vegas location is due to open in October at this time so we will have to check it out then.

New Food Court On The Strip

The new Boulevard Food Court has now opened on the South Strip north of the MGM Grand and, just north of the Coke Cola store where the giant Coke bottle is. The new food court is 13,000 square feet and includes nine food tenants. The food is getting good reviews and includes El Dorado Express yes, a offshoot of El Dorado Cantina which is located next to the Sapphire strip club; Other restaurants in the food court to name just a couple include Red Dog as well as a Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf which is a nice alternative to the usual Starbucks.

We don’t often write about the Green Valley Ranch resort on this site mainly because we visit their sister property the Red Rock Resort more often, which is a shame because Green Valley Ranch is a beautiful property. If you want an excuse to check it out and are in town at the end of the month you might want to attend a five course dinner with wine paring at a special event on October 29th.
