In Las Vegas you don’t really need an excuse to party but in honor of St Patrick’s Day the Plaza Hotel & Casino in Downtown Las Vegas is having a free party. The free party is Saturday March 17th night under the famed domed entrance of the Plaza and runs between 7 pm and ends at 10 pm with a 3-minute firework show.
During the event will be Irish inspired entertainment as well as a DJ on hand to spin some Irish music while you drink your green beer. At the event you will also see the debut of the Plaza’s new 10 feet by 5 feet behind the stage with flames throughout the party.
The free firework show starts at 10 pm and, will have fireworks shot from various locations on the property in a special green pyrotechnics display; I don’t know how many shades of green there are in firework’s, but I guess we are going to find out.
Tonight, is another free concert downtown on Fremont Street under the canopy, with tonight’s performance by the band Collective Soul. The concert begins at 9pm on the 3rd Street Stage with another upcoming free concert Chevelle performing September 30th in the same place.
A new show has been added to the Fremont Street Experience canopy the new Viva Vision show features several musical tracks from the band Linkin Park. The show is a tribute to the band who’s lead singer Chester Bennington just recently past away and, features the hits Burn it down, Numb and In the end. The new show is part of the rotating selection of shows with the shows running each night generally from 8pm to 1am.
Tonight at the Container Park another family friendly movie will be on the main stage at 7pm; You might want to get there a bit early to set up your blanket on the grass in front of the stage, so you can then relax until the movie starts. Tonights movie is the classic baseball movie ‘The Bad News Bears’ starring a very young Tatum O’ Neal and Walter Matrhau. In this movie Walter Matthau’s character Morris Buttermaker is a hard drinking ex minor league player who coaches a Little League team of misfits and outcasts. The teams fortunes look up when a feisty gifted pitcher called Amanda Whurlitzer played by Tatum O’ Neal comes along and joins the team. The movie may be older but its cute family fun and watching a movie on a big screen on a blanket isn’t a bad way to spend the evening. The Container Park if you haven’t visited it before is a selection of shops and restaurants inside shipping containers and is located at 707 Fremont Street a short walk from the El Cortez.
This is a picture i took in downtown Las Vegas in 1985 in front of Fitzgerald’s Hotel and Casino. This was back when you could drive down Fremont Street as you can see by the taxi stand. The front of this hotel now is a lot sleeker than it was then and the luck of the Irish theme has been toned down; Also notice the picketers out front which happened a lot in the 80’s.
