Sports Deli Closes

MGM, Las Vegas

Carnegie DeliIt’s been a tough time for delis in recent times first with the closure of Canters Deli at the Linq and now comes news that The Sports Deli at the MGM Grand has closed. The Sports Deli may be know to many as the Stage Deli which it was named for 23 years before they changed the name but either way the location is going to become another Starbucks because of the lack of Starbucks in Las Vegas (yes that was sarcastic).

If you still want your deli fix and are craving a huge pastrami sandwich for example, the Carnegie Deli at the Mirage is still open and a good option and well worth a visit. Deli’s in Las Vegas used to be really popular at one time but maybe the younger generation are less interested in huge sandwiches of meat either way the Carnegie Deli at the Mirage seems to get good traffic and hopefully it remains open.

The Donut Bar

The Donut Bar Outside

The Donut Bar SignYes i do visit the buffets or Dunkin Donuts at the Fremont for breakfast but at least once per trip sometimes more i walk over to the Donut bar for their amazing fresh made donuts. The Donut Bar is a short walk from Fremont Street and has the usual selection of coffees, lattes and mochas but what people are there for is the good donuts with the best ingredients with exotic flavors that you don’t always find at a donut shop such as cake batter, Nutella, Snickers or Bacon; Yes the bacon donut does taste good with its slightly salty taste but sweet at the same time a little strange but really good.

The Donut Bar DonutsThe Donut bar opens at 7 am during the week and 8 am on the weekends but one note once they sell out of the days donuts they close up for the day so if you visit later you might find a note on the door that they have sold all the donuts so closed for the day so get there early. The Las Vegas location is an outpost of a popular San Diego based donut shop and with the big sizes and quality ingredients it reminds me a little of Voodoo Donuts in Portland although the Donut Bar does less of the wacky flavors like Capt Crunch that Voodoo does.

Mirage Tram Reopens

The tram that runs since 1993 between the Mirage and Treasure Island (now TI) is finally running again after it closed late last year after a short time reopening after a complete renovation; The tram was only open three weeks after the complete renovation of the system before a two ton steel wheel broke which forced the tram to be closed while a new part was fabricated and then installed. So now the two  car 100 passenger tram is back running the short trip between the two properties.

If you want to use the newly opened tram the hours are from 9 am to 1 am Sunday to Thursday and until 3 am on Fridays and Saturdays. The tram ride is free and the wait isn’t too long usually for the tram to return to your station unless their is crowds but even during busy times it doesn’t seem to bad as many people don’t know the tram even exists.

Sun Country Adding LV Flights

Airplane

Minneapolis based Sun Country Airlines which eliminated first class seats not to long ago and relaunched itself as a low cost carrier has announced that they are adding more flights to Las Vegas starting September 5th; There will be thirteen new nonstop flights added per week to four cities which are St Louis, San Antonio, Redmond, Oregon and Providence, Rhode Island to what is now Sun County’s second hub after Minneapolis-St Paul which is their main hub.

Sun Country is one of several low cost carriers to Las Vegas with Spirit, Allegiant, Frontier and Southwest if you still consider Southwest to be a low cost airline the market is becoming very competitive for consumers which keeps fares low. The new ultra low cost airlines are also adding direct flights to Las Vegas from airports and markets not previously served by larger carriers, these carriers ay not be for everyone but they do offer a less expensive way to visit Las Vegas.

Hyde Nightclub To Close

The one consistent thing in Las Vegas is that the city is always changing and one upcoming change is the announcement that Hyde at the Bellagio will close on July 6th. Hyde is the nightclub that has an amazing 10,000 square foot space with an amazing spot with views of the Bellagio fountains. The Hyde space will be remodeled with a new name and concept, no  date has been announced but it’s expected to reopen by the end of the year. Hyde has been open about eight years which is a pretty good run and the club i’m sure was busy but for such a prime space the club would need to be full all the time so maybe a new name and concept will bring in new crowds.

Kaos Now Open At Palms

Palms Sign

poolMany people had been waiting for this Kaos, the new nightclub and day club has finally opened at the Palms with a 73,000 square foot day club and a 20,000 square foot nightclub. The new club in the press release claims that Kaos has the highest numbers of pools of any resort in North America i have no idea if thats true or not but either way i’m not going to count them. The new club has a 270 foot LED wall that runs along the side of the Ivory Tower facing the Strip and they are saying its the largest video screen in Las Vegas also as part of the club is a Tesla coil ceiling for sound and special effects; Additional features of the club include two cannons that shoot water 100 feet in the air, three sculptures from Damien Hirst and a champagne vault with personalized butler service.

Kaos is part of the $690 million remodel of the Palm’s and could bring the club crowds back to the Palms which at one time was the hottest place in town for the club crowd before Wynn and other competitors upped their game. When Station Casinos bought the Palms many wondered if they would just keep the property a locals centered property and abandon the tourist crowd but with all the money they have spent its clear they want to draw the tourists as well as locals to the resort.

Ski Resort Extends Season

Most visitors to Las Vegas most likely don’t realize you can actually snow ski about an hour or so from Downtown Las Vegas on Mount Charleston. Mount Charlestown is beautiful to visit anytime of the year but if you want to get in some skiing  there still time as the Lee Canyon ski resort on Mount Charleston has announced that they are staying open until April 14th instead of closing yesterday as planned. The resort has had the biggest snowfall in about a decade with more than double the yearly snowfall at 18 feet instead of the normal yearly average of 8.1 feet. Before you drive up to Mount Charleston check with the Lee Canyon ski resort for current conditions as well as cost and operating hours.

NoMad Pool Opens Today

Park MGM Las Vegas

poolToday is the opening of the NoMad pool which is located on the third floor of the new Park MGM with the Pool Restaurant serving a special all day brunch based on items at the NoMad restaurant downstairs. Apart from another new option for a resort on the Strip with a pool starting this Friday April 12th you also have a new day club option with this one called Jemaa which is the name of the main market square in Marrakech, Morocco which is a creative name for a day club. For the debut of Jemaa their will be three different Dj’s hosting for each of the first three days and good news for locals you can get in before noon for free with showing a Nevada ID.

Tip: If you are staying at the property and you like to take an afternoon nap like i do yes i’m old, then ask for a room away from the pool as live Dj’s and people partying doesn’t make for a restful nap.

Virgin Hotel Joins Hilton

hard rock sign

Once the Hard Rock resort finishes its remodel and opens under the Virgin Hotel name it will also become part of the Hilton Hotels reservation system and be part of the Hilton Honers loyalty program.

Unlike most Hilton Hotels this property will operate under its own brand name as its part of the Curio Collection by Hilton a collection of 30 properties in 7 countries that keep their individual identities.

After completion of the transformation the new Virgin Las Vegas will have 1,500 rooms and 110,000 square feet of meeting and event space. The Hard Rock is quite a distance from the Strip and it will be interesting to see how Virgin Hotels gets people to visit the resort. The Hard Rock used to draw rock fans and baby boomers as well as a younger crowd for its wildly popular day club called Rehab the Virgin is known in the United States but not the Virgin Hotels brand; although the Hilton Hotels reservation system will bring in visitors from the start which will help it.
