In good news for guests at the Venetian, the main pool has reopened after being closed for months while it was being remodeled. The make over started last September and, cost millions of dollars but after nine months its ready for the hot Summer season where temperatures often get above 100 degrees in Las Vegas.
The always popular for foodies 13th Annual Las Vegas Restaurant Week starts today and runs through June 28th with nearly 200 restaurants taking part including many on the Strip.
During Restaurant Week the restaurants offer fixed price lunches or dinners in the $20 to $80 price range so its a great time to check out new restaurants or restaurants that you might have always wanted to try.
Apart from dining at some of the best restaurants in town for less the event also raises money for a good cause as part of the proceeds go to the Three Square Food Bank; Since the event launched in 2007 the Restaurant Week event proceeds have paid for five million meals for people needing help.
The number of restaurants involved is long so check out the website for all the participating restaurants.
Since i moved to the United States from England one thing I have missed is really good fish and chips. The fish and chips I previously reviewed were at Gordon Ramsey’s Fish and Chips located at the Linq Promenade which were really good but its always good to have options.
The latest option is about a mile from the Strip on East Sahara at Commercial Center with a restaurant called Catchers Fish House which i will have check out. The restaurant advertises itself as a foodies fish and chips place which sounds promising. The fish doesn’t sound like the cod in traditional British fish and chips instead they have catfish and red snapper flown in daily which is breaded by hand with a secret recipe.
The restaurant also has other options such as sandwiches, salads, tacos, wings and popcorn shrimp and at present its open 11 am to 11 pm daily.
It looks like the four month run of the The Naked Magicians at Brad Garett’s Comedy Club at the MGM Grand is over with website VegasChanges.com even reporting the two Australian performers have gone their separate ways.
According to the website one of the magicians has returned to Australia with other remaining in Las Vegas to join a variety show which is in development. Hopefully the show didn’t close for financial reasons it would be bad if they lost their shirt along with the rest of their clothes. Sorry i had to get a couple of puns in the story but those are just the bare facts.
The NHL Awards presented by Bridgestone returns to Las Vegas again on Wednesday June 19th with this time at the Mandalay Bay Events Center instead of last years location at the Hard Rock. This is the 10th Annual NHL Awards show which celebrates the top talent of the 2018-19 season.
If you are interesting in attending the show starts on June 19th at 4:30 pm with the doors opening at 3:30pm and at the time of writing this there is still a few tickets left. The tickets are $30 for seats together or $20 for split seats plus the usual taxes and fees. These are the cheap seats and will be a distance from the stage but an option if you are a fan or want a break from the casino floor.
It looks like the Popeye statue pictured above in front of the Wynn Theater is being moved again after being at least a couple of places around the Wynn properties in Las Vegas; This time though its moved much further to the East Coast to have it in place for the grand opening of the $2.6 billion Encore Boston Harbor in time for its opening later this month.
The statue itself was purchased at an art auction by Steve Wynn for $28 million and was created by artist Jeff Koon. The statue is really cool and, the question is how do you move a $28 million statue across country, i guess the answer is very carefully.
This past Saturday Intrigue Nightclub at the Wynn closed its doors after about a three year run with the club originally opening in April 2016. The nightclub business in Las Vegas is super competitive with Wynn being only of the top operators although Intrigue may have been overshadowed by other to clubs including Wynn’s own clubs.
The company plans to use the 14,000 square foot space as a private event space that can be used by up to 750 people for an event; There is always a demand for this kind of use in Las Vegas although i’m sure somewhere down the line the company will come up with a better use for this space.
To protect pedestrians on the sidewalks on the Las Vegas Strip from the traffic an additional 3,000 steel bollards as you can see in the picture are being installed.
The steel posts or bollards are in additional to the approximately 1,600 which have already been installed on Las Vegas Blvd which is better known too many as the Strip. The first bollards were installed in October of 2017 and its an on going project with the work expected to be finished by July.
The bollards once installed are connected to each other underground and are designed to stop the impact of a flatbed truck traveling at 55 mph. The need for for the bollards maybe a sad reflection of the times but at least they will be there to protect tourists and locals on the Strip.
Memorial Day for many is the start of Summer but some are already looking forward to the fall, when college football returns; So if you are one of them we do have at least one piece of news the date of the Mitsubishi Las Vegas Bowl 2019 which will take place Saturday September 21st 4:30 pm at the Sam Boyd Stadium.
This is the last year that the Las Vegas Bowl is to be held at the Sam Boyd Stadium as its moving next year to the new Las Vegas Stadium. The teams playing will be from the top teams in the Mountain West and Pac-12 conferences with the game being televised by ABC.
If you want to attend tickets go on sale July 6th with prices ranging from $35 to $250 plus the usual fees and can be purchased at unlvtickets.com.
Even though it wasn’t a place i visited often some people have missed the restaurant Smith & Wollensky since it closed its Strip side location next to the Showcase Mall near MGM. The restaurant closed after the Showcase Mall sold for a reported $60 million which included the building that Smith & Wollensky was in.
The new location is further down the Strip at the Venetian with a 450 seat restaurant in the former location of Zeffirino Restaurante which closed in May 2017. It will be interesting to see how the restaurant does in a non Strip side location and if it will be as successful.
