MGM Raises Resort Fees

It is now a little more expensive to stay at some MGM Resort International properties in Las Vegas as the daily resort fee has been raised to $45 per night at the Bellagio, Vdara and Aria.

At the moment the other MGM resorts in Las Vegas haven’t announced a resort fee increase with the increase for the moment just on their higher end properties. The new increase puts them on par with some of the of higher end properties on the Strip which include the Wynn, Encore, Venetian, Palazzo and the Waldorf Astoria.

Las Vegas visitors have resort fees always high on the list about things they don’t like but at least in the near term it doesn’t look like they are going away.

What No Straw In My Drink

Mandalay Bay

MGM Resorts have announced that they are going to be phasing out the use of plastic straws at its various properties. The program has started at the Aria and Mandalay Bay and will soon happen at all MGM Resorts properties in Las Vegas.

As the program starts you will still be able to request your server or bar tender for a straw but one won’t be automatically added to your drink; The eventually goal of the program is to eliminate all straws from MGM operated clubs, bars and restaurants.

The purpose of this program according to MGM Resorts is to eliminate the waste caused by disposable straws of which the company uses about 100 million a year. I can see how this will eliminate waste, but I can also see how this will save MGM Resorts a lot of money, so I wonder if the main goal is truly just to save the environment or cut out a cost. Either way a lot of places don’t give you drink stirrers anymore so now I cannot use a straw to stir my drink is it okay to use your fingers okay maybe not.

Patisserie’s Get Renamed

Bellagio Fountains

Because of the split of Jean Philippe Maury and MRI properties the two former Jean Philipe Patisserie’s have been renamed with names reflecting their location with the newly named Aria Patisserie as well as the Bellagio Patisserie. It’s not known if these will be the permanent names for these locations, but I do know the pastries are amazing and worth checking out.

MGM Grand Adds More Space

mgm grand

More convention and meeting space is coming to the Strip and we don’t meet just the expansion of the Las Vegas Convention Center; The MGM Grand has broken ground on an expansion to its Convention Center which will add 250,000 square feet of space to give it more than 850,000 square feet at the resort in total. The expansion will give MGM Resorts more than 4 million square feet of convention and meeting space at its Las Vegas resorts. Included in this total is 2 million square feet at the Mandalay Bay which has been greatly expanded as well as the recent expansion at Aria. The area being used for the MGM Grand expansion is near the resorts parking garage at Koval Lane and Tropicana Avenue and will also see the large circular driveway to the current convention center being replaced by the new expansion.

Pool Season Around The Corner

pool season

It seems strange to talk about the pool season in Las Vegas as California is being battered by Winter storms and many parts of the country are freezing cold with snow or big storms. But in Las Vegas the Spring pool season is just around the corner with The Hakkasan Group announcing March 10th as the opening date for its numerous pools and day clubs in Las Vegas. The Hakkasan Group pools to open then are Bare Pool Lounge at the Mirage, Wet Republic and the MGM Grand as well as the Liquid Pool Lounge at Aria. One note about the beginning of the pool season is that most pools are only open weekends or maybe Fridays as well as holidays until we get closer to Summer.

Red Velvet Pancakes At Aria

In the above video Chef Anthony Amoroso of Aria shows you how to make the amazing red velvet pancakes served at the resort at home. I don’t know if i would actually make these at home but it does make my mouth water and, want to add them to my next trip to Las Vegas. {Video courtesy of Aria Resort & Casino}

Bardot Brasserie At Aria

Above is a video about the new Bardot Brasserie a celebrity chef restaurant by Michael Mina  at Aria in the City Center. The concept of  making classic French food more approachable in a nice room but less formal than the traditional french restaurant seems like a good idea. If you have tried out the new restaurant add to the comment section or email your review to to share with other readers. (Video Courtesy of Aria Las Vegas)

American Fish Has Closed

Michael Mina’s American Fish closed down at Aria on June 30th maybe a little earlier than expected as a previous close date was mentioned for some time in July. The restaurant is being replaced with another restaurant concept by Michael Mina called BARDOT which is slated to open sometime in early 2014.

Speed Painting Demo Tonight

Tonight at the Deuce Lounge at Aria is something a little different a free speed painting demo by famous Kentucky speed painter Aaron Kizer. The doors open at 10pm and guests will be given a free raffle ticket with a chance to win one of the artist’s paintings. So if you are in the area and want to watch the talented artist create a picture in minutes you might want to stop by.

Pool Parties Announce Season Opening Dates

Yesterday we mentioned that Rehab the pool party at the Hard Rock was due to begin March 14th and at that time was the first major scheduled pool party to open. As we mentioned in the article it’s quite possible that another major pool party will announce an opening date before Rehab and in fact two have Bare at the Mirage and Liquid at the Aria both of which have announced opening dates of March 13th. This time of the year opening dates of the pool parties can be a bit fluid just like a Hollywood movie no one wants to open on a day with lots of other competition they want to open on a less crowded day so they can garner more press and attention.
