The north strip SLS has begun a $100 million renovation which will see all 1,615 rooms upgraded as replacement of slot machines and a redesign of the current pool area over the next years. Currently the SLS is pretty much on its own on that section of the north strip but with The Drew and Resorts World Las Vegas planned openings over the next could of years its seems the SLS is getting the property ready for the new competition; The new resorts will increase traffic to the north strip and the SLS is looking to get some of that business.
On my last trip to Las Vegas a tourist by the SLS asked me where the stars of celebrities were in the pavement and, i didn’t really have a great answer for her but i remember some in various places on center Strip but no one location. First of all if you are not familiar with what is officially called “The Las Vegas Walk Of Stars” it is similar to the Hollywood Walk Of Fame and, in this case the cement stars in the sidewalk honor Las Vegas entertainment people.
The cement stars were removed in several places on the Strip during construction, but good news as it looks like the stars will have a new home as they are moving to the Linq Promenade in a location near the High Roller observation wheel. The new home will be a lot better for the “Las Vegas Walk Of Stars” because with the previous home being on the Strip it was hard to see the stars without blocking the heavy foot traffic on the,, so a new place where people can look and take pictures will be a big plus.
With the recent sale of the SLS Las Vegas rumors started soon after that a name change for the property was on the horizon, maybe even back to its original name the Sahara; This rumor now seems a good possibility especially after the properties players club was renamed from the CODE to Club 52 which is the year the Sahara opened. A rebranding from the SLS name to the former Sahara would be a plus but the new owners still have a lot of work to market a good property in a not great location to locals and visitors.
The SLS Hotel & Casino on the north end of the Las Vegas Strip has updated its players club which was formally called The CODE. The new name for the players club is Club 52 and there are four levels which are Preferred, VIP, Elite with the highest level being Legend. To achieve the highest-level status, you must earn 150,000 points in a six month period and be invited to that level.
Many Las Vegas resorts offer discounts throughout the year for active as well as retired military personnel. The month of May is Military Appreciation Month with many resorts adding discounts for military personnel but one of the best deals is at the SLS; The SLS deal is 50 percent off all its restaurants except for Bazaar Meats and the discount is also good at the Center and Monkey Bars. If you are interested in staying at the property the discount also includes 20 percent off rooms. To receive the discounts military identification is required, as the deals run through the end of the month you still have time to take advantage of them for more information contact the SLS.
The SLS on the north end of the Strip has just started a promotion for guests of its loft inspired Story Tower who are 21 and older who book a two night stay for the promotion on slslasvegas.com for a stay between June 1st and September 5th 2016. The package includes VIP access to events on the property as well as a complementary mini bar with a bottle of vodka as well as Fireball, Bud Light, Pepsi and a range of mini bar snacks. SLS got a lot of attention when it first opened after the property was rebuilt from shell of the longtime historic Sahara hotel but because of its remote location on the north end of the Strip it has to really come up with clever marketing and promotions to get people to visit. I can see this promotion drawing groups of people to stay especially from Southern California on the weekends and I hope it does well to draw people to a nice property in a challenging location.
Before the opening of the SLS there was lots of talk about the Griddle Café a Los Angeles staple for 15 years known for its huge portions of breakfast food. The Griddle Café opened in August and in October the restaurant announced it was cutting its hours and, would no longer be a twenty four hour seven day a week restaurant. Now comes the news that the Griddle Café will close today for good with a new restaurant to open in its place tomorrow. The new restaurant called Northside Café will open tomorrow and plans are for it be open 24/7 and be more like a traditional resort coffee shop selling comfort type food. Traffic at the resort hasn’t been as good as they may have liked and more restaurant closings or changes could be possible although the Rock In Rio event later this year should help with traffic for the resort.
Soon after the recent rebirth of the Sahara as the SLS came the announcement that their buffet would only be open weekends and no longer on week days; Now the SLS has announced the buffet will go in to hibernation and be closed with a plan to reopen sometime next year after the slower Winter months. In recent years with the slow economy many resorts have cut hours for things such as their coffee shops especially during the slow months but closing a buffet completely at a new resort may be more of a sign of them not getting the traffic they expected. The SLS plans to revamp the buffet space during the downtime so they can make the space more attractive to locals although at this time no reopening date has been announced or potential hours the new buffet would operate in the spring.
The new SLS resort on the North end of the Strip made a big deal about its LIFE Nightclub before the properties opening but so far it seems the club isn’t drawing the attention it needs in a crowded Las Vegas night club scene. The properties location away from most of the Strip resorts also doesn’t help the club draw traffic although if they could draw some of the nightclub crowd to come check it out it could find its niche. One way the club is raising its profile is by the recent signing of a resident DJ in this case Steve Angello one of the top electronic dj’s who will be launching his new concept at LIFE called ‘Reflections’ on November 22nd. The signing of a resident dj is a good move and with the huge Rock In Rio event happening next year across the street from the club could do well in the long run.
When the new SLS stated that they were going to cater to locals as well as tourists many may have wondered how they were going to do that as locals generally go to their local casino most of the time than fight the tourists and traffic of the Strip; Well one way to market to the locals market is give them specials to draw them to the resort which is what the SLS is doing via its players club called The Code. Locals with the card get $5 drinks property wide from 5 to 8pm Sunday through Thursdays as well as 2 for 1 buffet deals which should draw some locals in to check out the property. The former Sahara was hurt by being surrounded by empty lots but if the new SLS at the same location can draw in more locals in with deals until the surrounding area gets built up over the next few years the property could do okay.
