Equestrian Center Downtown

Plaza Hotel, Las Vegas

After last years temporary equestrian facility for the National Finals Rodeo at the Plaza became so popular it will return again this year for the rodeo in December but the difference is that it will stay up and become a permanent attraction. The new event center will be a space for outdoor equestrian and multipurpose center as well as having 80 horse stalls for year round use.

The addition of a permanent facility may seem unusual especially in downtown but the National Finals Rodeo does bring big crowds that like to gamble and, if you have the space why not keep the event center up year round. The main competition for this new event center with equestrian is the south strip South Point resort with its huge equestrian arena.

$4.95 Steak & Eggs At Southpoint

Southpoint Steak & Eggs

Finding inexpensive food options on the Strip isn’t always the easiest thing to do although there are a few options. One such option is the Coronado Cafe at the Southpoint Hotel & Casino on the South Strip which is known for its inexpensive food deals. the best of which run from midnight to 6 am. I arrived in Las Vegas early in the morning so stopped at the South Point before i headed further down the Strip for some breakfast after the long drive from Southern California.

The Coronado Cafe is just off the main casino floor and is a large space with high ceilings, it was a little before 6 am so i was able to get seated right away and after scanning the menu i decided on the Steak & Eggs special you can see in the picture above which included a 7 oz New York Steak, hash browns, toast and jelly for $4.95. The steak was really tasty although as you can see you from the picture its long and narrow which is fine and, the rest of the items were good.

If you plan on checking out the late night food specials at the Coronado Cafe at Southpoint a couple of notes the Southpoint Hotel & Casino is on the Strip but its several miles south of the Mandalay Bay  so transportation is needed; Also if you add a drink to the deal it can push up the price quite a bit as i added a coffee which cost $3.45 extra but the meal was still a good deal.

Steak & Shake At Hooters

A third Las Vegas location for Steak ‘n Shake is coming soon at Hooters where it replace the now closed Mad Onion. I have been to one of the chains other two Las Vegas locations at the South Point resort and must admit it was a good burger and shake served in a room with a 50’s diner feel. The other current location is on the UNLV campus with a fourth Las Vegas restaurant planned for the Henderson area.

Free: Benny Binion Statue

Benny Binion Statue
Benny Binion Statue

A statue of Downtown legend Benny Binion at the South Point Hotel & Casino

Benny Binion is famous in the history of Downtown Las Vegas after he opened the Horseshoe casino in 1951 a mainstay of Downtown which in more recent times was renamed Binion’s Horseshoe and is now just called Binion’s. The Horseshoe was famous for excepting any size bet in the casino and, Benny Binion was a key figure in the development of the World Series of Poker tournament; If that wasn’t enough Benny Binion also helped the popular National Finals Rodeo secure its home in Las Vegas. In 1984 a 15-foot-tall, 2,800-pound bronze statue of Benny Binion on horseback was placed by Binion’s parking structure at the corner of Casino Center Drive and Ogden in Downtown. Back in 2005 we wrote a brief article about the statue which was created by Deborah Copenhaver and is very cool although the location of the statue meant that not many people saw it except maybe Las Vegas bloggers or people in to Las Vegas history. In 2008 the statue was moved to a better more visible location at the South Point Hotel & Casino on the South end of the Strip. South Point owner Michael Gaughan bought the statue from the Binion family for $1 under a deal where he would make a better permanent home for the statue. If you want to check out the statue it’s located in the corridor outside the South Point Hotel & Casino’s Equestrian Center and is available twenty-four hours a day to check out for free.

Ma’ Ceo Horses & Things Show

The South Point resort on the South end of the Strip has a large equestrian center which is often used for equestrian competitions and other events; One such upcoming event is the Ma’ Ceo event shown in the above video which they are advertising it as a cross between an equestrian event and a Cirque show.  The event does look interesting and the ticket prices are low so if you are looking for an inexpensive show during your April trip in might be worth checking out. If you do plan on checking out the show and don’t have access to a car you might want to take a cab to South Point as even though its on the Strip it is a long way South from the other resorts.

Penny Perks At South Point

The above video is  about a slot penny promotion for South Point on the South Strip for the month of February with a lady that is way too excited. Penny promotion have become popular in the last few years especially by locals casino such as Boyds who also has properties in Downtown Las Vegas. One note about penny slot machines is often need to play multiply pennies to get the big bonuses in some case up to 400 or $4 a spin so you might be better to play a 25 cent or $1 machine which has higher pay backs in Las Vegas but the penny machines are real popular.
